My brother is back to normal now, after a hospitalization and an adjustment of his meds. This weekend, I took him out to treat him for a meal and to buy him a few belated things in honor of his birthday. He loves golf, so I discovered that he had lost his beloved 3-wood. Shopping for a replacement was a nightmare. Golfers are notoriously picky about equipment, of course, but imagine what a mentally-ill golfer is like! We went to three different shops while he fretted that the old-fashioned, small-head woods are no longer available. Finally, I convinced him to accept a clearance club that didn't offend his sensibilities. Ironically, the club is officially from our father who had sent me some money to use on my brother's behalf, so I don't get credit for the gift, despite the hours invested...

I saw my brother today, on the way home from work. Ever since my sister alerted me that he was missing, I've reverted to my old habits from when he was homeless and I worked downtown. Back then, I would keep my eyes peeled for him as I walked around downtown and I would occasionally spot him also wandering around, digging in trash cans and generally wandering around like the mentally-ill homeless person he was. Well, the old habits paid off when I spotted him tonight, just like old times. I called out to him and he didn't answer at first. Once he stopped and talked to me, he seemed very, very paranoid and I'm not sure he recognized me. I don't know how we can help him in that state. If he's not a danger to himself and others, there aren't a lot of options until he's ready to ask for help.

Today is my brother's birthday and he's missing.
He's mentally ill, but lives on his own. We're not sure when he went off missing, but probably sometime in the last few days. We're pretty worried about him, but how do you search for a person who's lived on the streets before and may just be having an episode--or got a wild hair to take a bus somewhere? Or is it worse?
